With the passage of time, changes occurred to the Pollock surname. For some descendants of Scottish {Pollock it became Polk and Pogue, spelled in various ways. Capt. Robert Bruce Pollok emigrated from Donegal, Ireland to Maryland around 1680 and was the progenitor of a great number of persons now using the name Polk and Pollock. Prominent among his American descendants were James K. Polk, 11th President of the United States. (From Clan Pollock)
Lakeland was founded by Abraham Munn a
sept name of Clan Stewart. It was named by George Hamilton, of Scottish
descent and of course, Clan Hamilton, who arrived in Polk County in 1842
during the Second Seminole War, is believed to be the first permanent white
settler in Polk County.
Hamilton, according to family history, planted the first citrus trees in Polk
County with seeds from an orange given to him by a friendly Seminole.
The first jail was
called the McDermott House -- named after its first occupant.
Currently Lakeland is the home of the second largest and most active chapter of the New World Celts.
